Back Pain

Anyone else get back pain around their period? My back started bothering me off and on several months ago, and I just assumed it was from sitting too much and being fat and old. But now I'm starting to put the pattern together and realize it seems related to my period. I'm not just weepy and cranky because my back hurts; but I'm weepy and cranky AND my back hurts because my uterus is doing crazy shit like it does. Also I am bloated. So my back hurts, my stomach is sticking out, and I have cramps.

Ibuprofen doesn't seem to touch it, and I can't go on hormonal birth control for a variety of reasons. Any thoughts? DO YOU THINK IT'S FATAL? I'm a dork. But seriously, my back hurts. Help!

  1. Try NSAIDs (Advil or the like) starting 1 day before your period. Works best if you have a reliable enough schedule, but even if you take a moderately high dose as soon as you feel any symptoms (ie: whatever bloating/prelude to cramps you get) that can help too.

Alternately, a combo of tylenol/advil is also a good bet.

And some hippie things like yoga, heat, etc. Plus vitamins? I can't remember which offhand.

    1. Sometimes secretly in my head I think of you as my personal on-call physician.

Off to try all of the above (minus the hippie stuff probably).

  2. This totally happens to me too, and I've found that for some reason, around my period, my hamstrings get really tight and make my back hurt. The only thing that helps me is to stretch out my hamstrings a lot during that time.

    1. ouch! for some reason this month I am SO bloated and icky feeling. The back pain is relatively new but it just occurred to me that it seems related to the general heaviness/tightness around that whole area. periods are weird

  3. Sorry you were so uncomfortable, I'm late to the game here but adding my two cents anyway: I don't have back pain, and I'm on the Pill, so my observations may not be extremely relevant, but . . . when I'm on placebo week, which is basically the same as being on your period, EVERYTHING that could be a physical bother seems to be worse. Mine manifests mostly in my teeth, they get extremely sensitive during placebo week and it drives me nuts. But yes, I think that all the hormonal shifts can definitely make you either more aware of other pains or make them more inflamed some how. I'm not sure of the exact mechanism, but whatever it is, it sucks.

  4. It seems your emotions were all over the place. That’s no surprise, given the great deal of pain you were going through. Anyway, what was the doctor’s verdict? I hope it wasn’t as bad as you thought. Stay strong!

  5. I’m sorry to hear about the situation you’ve been in. I can only imagine the pain you go through every time you encounter your period, but I’m sure there’s a treatment for that that will soothe you. I hope you find a solution for that in time. Take care!
